So, generally, Ashley did not defeat the 'Winged One' but the latter merely spared him, perhaps out of boredom or a deeper reason, who knows. Also, he did not defeat all the shadows that were there. During his unconsciousness, many of them left, opting other targets and at that moment, something came to help Ashley get rid of the remaining ones. So, he woke up feeling his energy drained, wounded but alive thanks to the creature. _{Spoilers: Which will be his new Persona in the upcoming story}

And regarding the last bits, let's say that these three, Tomoya, Moka and Ashley stumbled on each other, en route to get to higher floors. Because each of them were drained and wounded, they form a reluctant team to increase their chance of surviving their predicament.
