Shading Colour choice Tutorial by cherubchan Shading Colour choice Tutorial by cherubchan
Since a few friends of mine thought this was useful, I've decided to post it up on dA :'DD
Don't mind the messiness, and this may not be 100% accurate but it's how I choose my own colours.

Be daring to experiment with different bases, shades and highlights.

Hope it helps! :iconhhhhplz:

For the purple and blue examples, did you only change the hue or did you change hue and value?

Oh, I think I usually change both- I just pull the slider to whichever colour I find suiting? Sorry if it doesn't make much sense but usually it's a trial and error thing for me too xDD

That's ok.  I'm just happy I'm not alone regarding this.  I generally hate color and I used to avoid it like the plague but I forcing myself to do it everyday is training me to learn color relationships.  How about when to use saturation?  Like when it's a night scene in a meadow and the only source of light is the moon, when is using saturation okay?  Like it looks too out of place but without it there is not enough contrast?

Lol I see xD Well I try to use saturation whenever I can? Again it's trial and error for me-- Hmm I just try to make the picture pop more is all pfft. And usually I ignore some of the lighting rules /bad at it too ahahah

I don't even colour digitally, but my painting teacher always gives out to me for using too much black and white paint for shading and highlights. Looking at this I can clearly see why. They can really dull down an image.
Thank you so much for this :iconspazhugplz:

you always shade and color so beautifully, so thank you for these tips ^^ do you usually determine the color schemes by playing around with the colors to see what looks best?

What about for browns and tans? What colors for shading would you recommend? And for grays?
Reply
:iconcherubchan:
cherubchan Featured By Owner Sep 12, 2012  Hobbyist General Artist
Well, for browns/tans, I stir towards using red-purple or blue-purple. The choice depends on the suitability of the shade, you can try to experiment with both and choose the final shade colour later.

Grays is very variable actually o v o You can go for a darker shade of gray with almost any hue; blue, purple and green are my usual picks, but you can always go for red/yellow/pink too. Again, it depends on your taste.

Hope this helps > v < /

Yes it helps wonderfully! Thank you so much <3

I always see artists use bright vibrant colors to shade boring ones and make amazing effects, but I've never been adventurous enough to try it myself. But I want the look it gives, so I'm gonna try it out!
